Americans are living longer, but many retirees are outliving their savings.
The good news is Americans are living longer. But the worry for many retirees is that they’ll outlive their savings. The average life expectancy for men in the U.S. now reaches 83 years old — and women are living to age 86. Living 20 years or more beyond the traditional retirement age may call for some non-traditional investment moves. Conventional strategies call for putting more money into bonds and less into stocks as you grow older, to minimize financial risk. Barry Gillman, research director of the Brandes Institute, says market risk should not be an older investor’s biggest worry. The greatest risk is more ominous than market volatility, says Gillman. “For somebody who’s at retirement age or fairly soon after…
Romney once argued his only connection to GOP was party registration [New Video]
Mitt Romney’s biggest enemy in his bid for the presidency may not be any of his GOP rivals but rather his own words. Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski has unearthed video of an interview Romney gave to then-CNN anchor Judy Woodruff in September 2002, in which the then-Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate says his “only connection” to Republican leaders in the state was that “I’m registered as a Republican.” On it’s own, it’s a phrase that’s sure to be seized upon by Romney’s opponents who have been eager to trash him as someone who is not a real conservative. But Romney appears to have actually been defending his own stance as a party outsider—in language that seems pretty familiar to…
Fox’s Geraldo Rivera Blames Hoodie For Trayvon Martin’s Death [Video]
This morning on Fox and Frends, Fox contributor Geraldo Rivera remarked, “I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman (his killer).” While he agreed that Zimmerman “should be prosecuted,” Rivera also blamed Trayvon’s parents for letting him go outside wearing a hooded sweatshirt. Media Matters flagged the exchange: BRIAN KILMEADE KILMEADE (co-host): Let’s talk about the Trayvon Martin case and what’s going on in Florida right now. GERALDO RIVERA: I believe that George Zimmerman, the overzealous neighborhood watch captain should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law and if he is criminally liable, he should be prosecuted. But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters…
Breaking: Whitney Houston Died from Accidental Drowning, Cocaine use.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has determined that Whitney Houston’s official cause of death is: “drowning and effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”. The singer, 48, was also found to have cocaine in her system at the time of her death. Contributing factors of her death included heart disease and cocaine use, an investigation found. Houston was found unresponsive and underwater in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Feb. 11, a day before the Grammy Awards, and was pronounced dead at the scene soon afterward. Coroner officials previously confirmed that prescription pill bottles were found in her room, but the number of pills were “not in alarming amounts.” Houston, who had long battled drug…
Yes: Buying cheaper than renting in nearly 100 major U.S. markets
Buying is more affordable than renting in 98 out of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas — even in New York, Los Angeles and Boston, according to real estate company Trulia‘s rent vs. buy index. The index is based on asking prices for rental units and homes for sale on the company’s website between Dec. 1, 2011, and Feb. 29. “As rents rise and prices stagnate, homeownership is becoming even more affordable, but rising rents create a dilemma for people who can’t afford to buy yet,” says Jed Kolko, Trulia’s chief economist. “Rising rents make it harder for people to save for a down payment, which is the biggest barrier to buying a home that aspiring homeowners face.” Homeowners…
